DESCRIPTION

Athos is one of the main characters in The Three Musketeers, the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas. He is portrayed as a noble, reserved, and deeply melancholic man. With an elegant appearance and firm spirit, he is the most mature of the group formed by Porthos, Aramis, and the young D’Artagnan, whom Athos takes under his protection almost like a father. Although he appears upright and rational, he carries a persistent sadness that is reflected in his speech and his fondness for wine.

Behind his restrained behavior and strong sense of honor lies a tragic past. Athos was actually the Count of La Fère, an aristocrat who fell from grace after discovering that his wife, Milady de Winter, was a criminal. After condemning her to the gallows for treason and believing her dead, he was marked by guilt and distrust, especially towards women. This event defined his solitary nature and his wary attitude toward love.

Throughout the novel, Athos stands out for his bravery and loyalty to his friends and the ideals of justice. He is a thoughtful figure who brings balance to the group of musketeers, facing danger with composure and wisdom. His story adds depth and drama to the work, making him one of the most complex and human characters in Dumas’s universe.

On the reverse, the scene shows Athos challenging the Paris law enforcement and the new generation of musketeers, holding a pistol in one hand and a beer mug in the other. The scene takes place inside a tavern, where Athos would often go to drown his sorrows, and where he was famous for starting fights with other patrons. Can you find all the hidden mice in the scene?

The obverse depicts the royal throne of France, with the crown of Louis XIII and the solideo of Richelieu, who were vying for control of the country. A kneeling musketeer swears allegiance in the throne room of the Royal Palace, three pistols and three swords, representing the three musketeers, and the Public Seal of Niue.
